Issue 12: The November letters

Reader letters on narrow measures, preset loyalty, and the correct way to shelve a reading habit.

Every November the letters turn to shelving: what to keep close, what to lend, what to let go. This issue prints six of them with short replies.

On measures

A reader in Tulsa writes that the narrow column ended her skimming habit in a week. The reply is short: the column did not change; the pace did.

On presets

Preset loyalty is real. Two readers defend serif for essays with the seriousness of football supporters, and both make good points about figures in date lines.

Next week: the archive issue, with a full index of the season.
